Massachusetts Rebates and Tax Credits

The rebates in MA make solar a compelling investment. In total, government incentives pay for about 40% of the total up-front cost! The rebates and incentives come in 3 forms: Cash rebates, tax credits, and RECs (Renewable Energy Credits) The rebates are currently at $3.25 per watt for commercial systems and $2.25 per watt for residential. There are adders for using Massachusetts made materials like Evergreen solar panels and other adders for public buildings like schools. The rebate for residential systems is caped at about $12,000 per system which makes a 5 kW an ideal size. In addition to the rebate program there is a $1,000 MA tax credit on top of the Federal Tax Credit of $2,000. Homeowners are getting about $15,000 back in one form or another and therefore seeing after tax returns in the 6-10% annually.

On top of all of this, both homeowners and businesses owners receive renewable energy credit payments in the amount of $.03 per kWh. Since energy payments are typically about $.17 per kWh, the RECs improve the payback by almost 20%.
