Expected to save the district $10 million in avoided costs over the life of the system and offset 100% of the college’s electric energy demand

Borrego Solar designed, developed, and built a 1 megawatt solar carport system for Yuba College, a community college in the Yuba Community College District in Northern California. The solar system is expected to result in $10 million of avoided utility costs over the life of the system.

Together with its other solar project at Woodland Community College, the system is expected to offset 100% of the college’s electric energy use with solar power. “The YCCD Governing Board and leadership is committed to reducing our carbon footprint for our students and community. This is the environmentally responsible action to take and it will result in substantial cost savings that will lower our operating costs,” said Dr. Douglas Houston, Chancellor.

The Yuba College solar carport project is expected to produce 1.5 million kilowatt-hours of energy in the first year, which is equivalent to the amount of energy needed to power approximately 260 average California homes annually. Over the next 25 years, the system is expected to offset nearly 28,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents, which is the same amount sequestered by nearly 33,000 acres of US forest each year.
