Anaheim Convention Center Solar 2.4 MW Project Celebrates One-Year Anniversary as it Hosts Solar Power International
In its first year, the array generated 3.6 million kilowatt hours of energy and offset four million tons of greenhouse gas emissions
As the Anaheim Convention Center welcomes more than 15,000 attendees this week for Solar Power International, it celebrates the first year its 2.4 megawatt (MW) solar array has been generating clean, renewable energy for Anaheim Public Utilities. In its first twelve months of operation, the array generated 3.6 million kilowatt hours of energy, powering more than 200 conferences and events. It is currently the largest city-owned solar installation on a convention center in North America.
The solar energy generated from the array offsets four million tons of greenhouse gas emissions and nearly two million gallons of water, which would otherwise be used to generate energy from fossil fuels. The amount of carbon offset is equivalent to taking about 830 cars off the road for one year or the amount sequestered by 3,225 acres of U.S. forests annually. The energy generated from the array helps Anaheim Public Utilities meet its Renewable Portfolio Standard, requiring it to procure 25 percent of its energy from renewables by 2016.
“Our 2.4 MW solar array has provided renewable energy for over 200 events during the past year and it continues to bolster our sustainability initiatives and situate us as one of the greenest convention centers in the world,” said Tom Morton, executive director of the City of Anaheim’s Convention, Sports & Entertainment Department.
The installation—built by Borrego Solar Systems Inc., a leading designer, developer and installer of grid-tied solar photovoltaic systems—covers 300,000 square feet of rooftop space over Exhibit Halls A, B and C. The array utilizes 7,908 Yingli Solar high efficiency 300-watt 72-cell panels and SunLink Core RMS racking, a low-tilt solution developed to maximize energy harvest on large flat rooftops. Borrego Solar was selected as the Operations and Maintenance provider after a competitive bidding process with the City of Anaheim.
“The Anaheim Convention Center solar project is a keystone project for us here at Borrego Solar because it is a perfect illustration of the benefits solar can provide to municipalities,” said Mike Hall, CEO of Borrego Solar. “From the onset, the collaboration and cooperation between the utility, the on-site facility team, and our technology partners at SunLink and Yingli was seamless. We are proud of being a part of this project and continuing to serve Anaheim by ensuring maximum production and longevity of the array.”
In addition to having the largest solar array of its kind, the Convention Center is also one of the largest LEED-certified exhibition facilities in the United States. The facility maintains a commitment to sustainability through initiatives such as an on-site recycling program, a farm-to-fork culinary program, an on-site composting facility and a rooftop herb garden. Earlier this year, the Convention Center announced the ground breaking on its seventh expansion to provide additional meeting space for the increasing number and caliber of events it hosts.
